# D7 — Sanremo and the Riviera di Ponente

**Research cut-off:** 23 September 2026. **Language:** English. **Scope:** Sanremo, Bordighera, Alassio, Finale Ligure, Dolceacqua and Apricale day trips; Genoa–Ventimiglia rail corridor; Nice Côte d’Azur Airport; parking; beaches and 2026 beach-club pricing; Ligurian food; Monaco and Menton. Every factual price, time, address or date below has a linked source and a checked date. “Partial” means the source is official/current but the detail is not fully published in a machine-readable way; “not found” means no current source was located.

## 1. Start here

### Who it suits and how many nights

- **Best for 2–7 nights:** travellers who want a relaxed coastal base with rail access, sandy or pebble beaches, cycle paths, Belle Époque villas, Ligurian food, and easy France/Monaco day trips. Sanremo is the most versatile base; Alassio is the easiest pure beach stay; Finale Ligure is strongest for outdoor travel; Bordighera is quieter and botanical; the inland villages are best as day trips.
- **Suggested split:** 3 nights in Sanremo or Bordighera + 2 nights in Alassio or Finale Ligure for a coast-and-outdoor combination. Without a car, use Sanremo/Bordighera for France and Dolceacqua, and Finale/Alassio for the eastern coast.
- **Book ahead:** accommodation for **Festival di Sanremo, 16–20 February 2027**; Villa della Pergola guided entry; popular 2026 beach clubs in July–August; guided bike, food and inland-wine experiences; late-season or festival transfers. Casino entry itself is free, but gaming is 18+ and has a dress code.

### Towns at a glance

- **Sanremo:** largest and liveliest base; Casino, La Pigna, villas, market, beaches, 24-km coastal cycle path and the best public-transport spread.
- **Bordighera:** palm gardens, old town, villas and a quieter waterfront; mainly pebbly beaches and a steep Old Town.
- **Alassio:** fine sandy bay, long promenade, Budello shopping lane, Muretto and a dense hotel/restaurant offer; busiest in summer.
- **Finale Ligure:** three linked centres—Finalmarina, Finalpia and medieval Finalborgo—plus beaches, climbing, caves and mountain biking.
- **Dolceacqua:** inland medieval Doria village, Romanesque bridge and Rossese wine; a practical day trip from Ventimiglia/Bordighera.
- **Apricale:** tiny hill village with stone lanes, a castle/theatre tradition and views; pair with Dolceacqua rather than use as a coast base.

## 2. When to go

The coast has a mild year-round climate, but the beach season and hotel pressure are very different from the cycling and walking seasons. Weather and sea figures below are climatic averages, not a forecast; sea-temperature figures are third-party.

| Month | Traveller picture | Sea / weather signal | Crowds and hotel pressure | Events / operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | Mild winter walks, quiet old towns, occasional rain | Avg sea about 13°C; third-party climate average | Low, except New Year weekends | Many beach clubs closed; restaurants may take winter breaks |
| Feb | Cool but often bright; Festival week is the exception | Avg sea about 13°C | **Very high in Sanremo, 16–20 Feb 2027** | Book months ahead; road/parking controls can change |
| Mar | Excellent cycling and gardens; sea still cold | Avg high about 15°C; sea about 13–14°C | Low–medium | [Sanremo in Fiore 2027 is scheduled for 14 Mar](https://www.sanremoinfiore.it/en/) and [Milano–Sanremo 2027 for 20 Mar](https://www.milanosanremo.it/en/). Checked 2026-09-23 · verified/official event sites |
| Apr | Good for villas, villages and walking; showers possible | Sea about 15°C | Medium around Easter; lower midweek | Outdoor businesses begin reopening; exact opening dates vary |
| May | Strong all-round month; warm days, manageable beaches | Sea about 18°C | Medium; weekends rise | Gardens and cycle path work well; some lidos open |
| Jun | Beach and cycling season; long daylight | Sea about 21–22°C | Medium–high | Most beach clubs and outdoor operators active; verify local calendars |
| Jul | Hot, dry, busiest beach month | Sea about 23–24°C | High | Reserve sunbeds, parking and family rooms; heat makes hill walks early-morning only |
| Aug | Hottest water and strongest holiday atmosphere | Sea about 24°C | **Very high**; Italian holiday peak | Pre-book lidos, restaurants and parking; local bus demand is high |
| Sep | Warm sea, fewer crowds after the first half, excellent cycling | Sea about 22–23°C | Medium–high early; then medium | Many lidos continue into September; check closing date per operator |
| Oct | Best for food, villas and inland villages; wetter risk | Sea about 20°C | Low–medium | Some seasonal hotels/lidos close; rain can affect trails |
| Nov | Quiet, mild by northern-Italy standards; food and museums | Sea about 17–18°C | Low | Check weekly closing days; weather-sensitive attractions may reduce hours |
| Dec | Festive lights, calm coast, bright winter days between rain | Sea about 15°C | Medium around Christmas/New Year | Beach season closed; some hotels/restaurants close for annual holidays |

- **Milano–Sanremo:** 20 March 2027 shown on the [official race site](https://www.milanosanremo.it/en/). Checked 2026-09-23 · verified.
- **Other 2027 events:** not published in a reliable official calendar as of 2026-09-23. Do not copy 2026 event dates forward.
- **Ferries/lifts:** there is no destination-wide ferry season central to these towns. Beach clubs publish their own seasonal dates; the official town beach directories identify operators but do not guarantee each operator’s 2027 opening. Status: **partial**.

## 3. Getting there — last leg only

### Rail corridor

- **Main line:** the Genoa–Ventimiglia railway serves Finale Ligure Marina, Alassio, Sanremo and Bordighera. Use [Trenitalia Regional timetable](https://www.trenitalia.com/it/informazioni/orari-regionali-digitali.html) and live journey search for the travel date. The 2026 regional timetable is date/period dependent; exact first/last trains are **not stable enough to print as universal times**. Checked 2026-09-23 · official, partial.
- **France connection:** [SNCF TER Nice–Ventimiglia](https://www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/trajet-nice-ventimiglia-stazione) publishes more than 30 return services per day, a full-fare single of **€10.60**, and typical journey planning. The 2026 search showed first departures around 05:49 and last around 20:54 in the timetable snapshot; check the date-specific search because works can alter service. Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified for published fare / partial for daily timetable.
- **Station-to-centre:** Sanremo station is on the lower edge of town; the main centre, Casino and La Pigna require an uphill walk or local bus/taxi. Bordighera station is close to the lower town, but Villa Garnier is about **1.2 km on foot with a steep rise**; taxi is recommended with luggage. [Villa Garnier FAQ](https://www.villagarnier.it/faq.php). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified.
- **Finale Ligure Marina:** station is practical for Finalmarina; Finalborgo and the climbing hinterland need a local bus, taxi or walk. The official destination guide lists the IAT and local taxi contacts. [Visit Finale useful information](https://visitfinaleligure.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/FinaleLigure-magazine.pdf). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, partial for live local departures.

### Nice Côte d’Azur Airport to the Italian Riviera

- **Airport → Nice Saint-Augustin:** the airport’s official page says Nice Saint-Augustin is reached via the free airport link / short pedestrian route; Terminal 1 to the station is about 500 m / roughly 7 minutes on the dedicated walkway. [Nice Airport train access](https://www.nice.aeroport.fr/en/directions/train). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified.
- **Airport → Nice Ville:** tram line 2 links the airport to Jean Médecin; the station connection involves a walk/transfer to Gare Thiers. The airport states the trip to the city centre is under 30 minutes and the general airport fare is **€10** on Lignes d’Azur; the dedicated airport access page confirms the fare. [Nice Airport public transport](https://www.nice.aeroport.fr/en/directions/public-transport) · [Lignes d’Azur airport access](https://www.lignesdazur.com/en/airport). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified.
- **Nice → Ventimiglia → Sanremo/Bordighera:** take SNCF TER to Ventimiglia, then Trenitalia westbound. Allow a connection buffer at Ventimiglia; the published Nice–Ventimiglia journey is about 57–65 minutes depending on service. Sanremo and Bordighera are then onward Italian regional stops. Exact combined fares are dynamic / not consistently exposed by the official pages: **not found as a single airport-to-town fare**.
- **Direct coach:** Nice Airport lists ZOU! Route 80 toward Monaco–Menton, not Sanremo. There is no consistently published direct public airport bus to Sanremo on the official airport page; late arrivals or heavy luggage therefore make a private transfer the realistic option. [Nice Airport long-distance/public-transport pages](https://www.nice.aeroport.fr/en/directions/public-transport). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, partial.
- **Private transfer:** most useful after the last TER, for 3–4 travellers with luggage, or for Dolceacqua/Apricale where the final hill-road leg is awkward. Seller/price is not named because no official destination tariff was found; quote required, **not found**.

### Inland day trips

- **Ventimiglia → Dolceacqua / Apricale:** Riviera Trasporti Line 7 connects Ventimiglia, Dolceacqua, Isolabona and Apricale. The summer 2026 timetable shows Ventimiglia–Dolceacqua about 15–20 minutes and several scheduled departures; Apricale is reached on selected branch trips / connections via Isolabona. [Summer 2026 PDF](https://rivieratrasporti.it/images/_ORARI/2026_Orario_Estivo_Ver._1.3%C2%AA_dal_15-06-2026.pdf) · [winter timetable](https://rivieratrasporti.it/images/_ORARI/2025-2026_Orario_Invernale_Generale_5%C2%AAVer_dal_02-03-2026.pdf). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified for timetable publication; fare not found on the accessible PDF.
- **Parking in the villages:** official sources do not publish a single tourist day rate. Expect limited roadside/municipal spaces and a walk uphill; exact paid/permit rules are **not found**. Do not park across lanes or in the historic lanes.

### Parking and ZTL

- **Sanremo:** the municipality publishes paid-parking information and festival-specific parking/navetta plans, but a universal 2026 hourly tariff table was not exposed in the accessible page. [Municipal tariff page](https://www.comune.sanremo.im.it/it/page/informazioni-in-merito-alle-regole-di-calcolo-della-tariffa-alle-variabili-alle-riduzioni-e-alle-imposte-applicabili) · [Festival parking/navetta](https://www.sanremoliveandlove.it/en/parking-festival-e-servizio-navetta/). Checked 2026-09-23 · partial. Do not assume free parking near the centre.
- **Bordighera:** the town offers paid blue spaces; published subscription rates are **€45/month or €400/year residents; €60/month or €500/year non-residents**. A day/hour rate was not exposed on the official page. [Bordighera parking subscriptions](https://www.comune.bordighera.im.it/Servizi/Abbonamento-parcheggi). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified for subscriptions / partial for daily rate.
- **Alassio:** official municipal material gives **€1.50/hour ordinary tariff**; discounted resident/worker tariffs and Stadio Alassio Parking are listed separately. The official tourist FAQ says there is **no ZTL**. [Municipal parking report](https://www.comune.alassio.sv.it/it-it/download/relazione-parcheggi-e-mercato-421202-31-1308-40e05a5833ad478b6cec08ddc42d04d8) · [Alassio FAQ](https://www.visitalassio.com/en/holiday-ideas/faq). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, verified.
- **Finale Ligure:** the official guide lists parking areas at Finalmarina, Finalborgo, Finalpia and Varigotti but does not give one current universal tariff. [Finale practical guide](https://visitfinaleligure.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/FinaleLigure-magazine.pdf). Checked 2026-09-23 · official, partial.
- **ZTL caution:** check signs at arrival; town-centre historic cores and festival/event areas can have temporary restrictions. No single destination-wide ZTL map covering all four towns was found.

## 4. Where to stay

### Area choice

- **Sanremo centre / Casino / Corso Matteotti:** best without a car, for nightlife, restaurants, Casino and shopping. Some streets are pedestrianised and luggage drop-off needs planning. La Pigna is atmospheric but steep and stair-heavy; avoid it for rolling luggage unless the accommodation confirms access.
- **Sanremo east / Corso Imperatrice / Foce:** better for sea views, gardens and beach access; quieter at night, but farther from the station and uphill routes remain.
- **Bordighera lower town / Lungomare Argentina:** easiest for sea, restaurants and station access; quieter than Sanremo. **Bordighera Alta** has character and views but steep lanes and luggage friction.
- **Alassio waterfront / Budello:** best for sandy beach, family convenience and a dense evening offer; summer prices and noise are higher. Solva is panoramic and quieter but needs a taxi/car for luggage.
- **Finalmarina:** easiest beach-and-rail base. **Finalborgo:** best for history, restaurants and outdoor culture but not on the beach. **Finalpia/Varigotti:** calmer beach options; local transport or car helps.
- **Dolceacqua / Apricale:** choose one night only if you want slow inland evenings, wine and hill-village atmosphere. For a first Riviera trip, use them as day trips.

### 2026 sunbed price evidence

- **Sanremo, Bagni La Brezza:** published component rates are €3/day entry, €3.50 umbrella and €6/day sunbed; the page notes the base package as one umbrella + two sunbeds, but the displayed table is not a clean 2026 season price sheet. A simple component sum would be €15.50/day before any cabin/club supplement; treat as **partial, not a regional average**. [Operator tariff](https://www.bagnilabrezza.it/tariffe/). Checked 2026-09-23.
- **Alassio:** [Bagni Pietro](https://www.bagnipietro.com/listini) publishes a 2026 listino for one umbrella + two sunbeds; [Bagni Carlo](https://www.bagnicarlo.it/) also publishes a 2026 price list. Exact row values were image/PDF-dependent in the accessible source, so current figure is **not extracted / partial**—book or ask the operator for the row and beach line.
- **Finale Ligure:** [20Riviera](https://www.20r.it/info-prevendite-e-contatti/) displays a price example for umbrella + 1 deckchair + 1 sunbed (€24 full day / €18 half day) and umbrella + 1 sunbed (€13 / €10); a two-sunbed total is not printed, so mark **partial**. [Bagni Est](https://www.bagniestfinale.it/it/contatti) publishes 2026 opening period (1 Jun–15 Sep, 09:00–19:30) but not a complete tariff on the page.
- **Bordighera:** the official beach directory lists operators and addresses but no 2026 two-sunbed tariff. **Not found as a town-wide figure.** Request the chosen lido’s current listino.

### Other activities

- **Cycle path:** 24 km of mostly flat coastal former railway, suitable for ordinary bikes, e-bikes, walkers and families; NoloBici from €5/hour city bike. - **Hiking:** Finale’s Perti/Strada Beretta routes combine history and hills; difficulty and closures are route/weather dependent. [Official route](https://visitfinaleligure.it/en/culture/historical-and-cultural-routes/remarkable-itineraries/along-the-beretta-road-with-the-infanta-of-spain/). Checked 2026-09-23 · verified for route description; live closure status not found.
- **Wine:** Rossese di Dolceacqua, Pigato, Vermentino and local Taggiasca olive oil are the food-and-wine spine. Arrange a licensed winery visit rather than assume walk-in tasting. [Sanremo food](https://www.sanremoliveandlove.it/en/food/) · [Visit Dolceacqua](https://www.visitdolceacqua.it/). Checked 2026-09-23 · verified.
- **Families:** Alassio’s fine sand, Finale’s promenade/Varigotti, accessible beaches in Sanremo and short Dolceacqua walks are the easiest choices. Check shade, toilets and lifeguard season with the chosen operator.
- **Evenings:** Sanremo has the broadest late-night choice and Casino; Alassio has promenade/Budello bars; Bordighera is calmer; Finale concentrates evening life in Finalmarina and Finalborgo; Dolceacqua/Apricale are atmospheric but quiet.

## 10. Itineraries

### One day

- **Sanremo day:** station/taxi → San Siro and La Pigna → market lunch with sardenaira/farinata → Casino exterior/interior → Villa Nobel if Tue–Fri → sunset on cycle path or Corso Imperatrice.
- **Bordighera day:** station → lower town and Lungomare → Sant’Ampelio → Old Town / Marabutto → Villa Garnier or Pallanca if open → dinner in the old town.
- **Alassio day:** station → Muretto/Budello → beach or marina → Villa della Pergola booked tour → aperitivo by the sea.
- **Finale day:** station → Finalmarina beach → Finalborgo and walls → Basilica/Santa Caterina → sunset return to the promenade.

### Two days

- **Day 1 Sanremo historic/cultural:** La Pigna, Casino, San Siro, Villa Nobel, market and aperitivo.
- **Day 2 coast/outdoor:** cycle Sanremo–Ospedaletti or Sanremo–Arma; alternatively Bordighera + Dolceacqua by train/bus.

### Three days

- **Day 1 Sanremo.**
- **Day 2 Bordighera + Dolceacqua:** rail to Bordighera, old town and gardens; continue to Ventimiglia and Line 7 to Dolceacqua if the return timetable works.
- **Day 3 Monaco or Menton:** early SNCF TER from Ventimiglia; return before the late-service risk.

### Rainy day

Villa Nobel, Casino, market, café/pastry crawl, Basilica interiors, Forte Santa Tecla if open, and a pre-booked cooking/food activity. Museums’ current hours should be rechecked the morning of the visit.

### Family day

Choose Alassio sand, a short cycle-path segment with NoloBici, lunch early, then an accessible promenade. Finale is good for a beach + Finalborgo pairing, but avoid exposed hill trails in heat or storm.

### Without a car / night split

- **No car:** base in Sanremo for the broadest services; add Bordighera and Dolceacqua; use Finale as a separate eastern base if you want hiking.
- **3 nights:** Sanremo 2 + Bordighera 1 for west/France. **5 nights:** Sanremo 2 + Alassio 1 + Finale 2, or Sanremo 3 + Finale 2. Do not move to Apricale for a short stay unless the hotel handles luggage/taxi logistics.

## 11. Day trips & next stops

| Trip | Transport and indicative time | Cost / ticket note | Day-trip verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Menton | TER from Ventimiglia; published Nice–Ventimiglia service continues through Menton, usually about 20–25 min from Ventimiglia | Fare varies by SNCF date/route; official TER search required. [SNCF route](https://www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/trajet-nice-ventimiglia-stazione) | Easy day trip; old town, beaches, Jean Cocteau area and gardens |
| Monaco | TER from Ventimiglia; minimum journey shown about 32 min | Dynamic fare; [SNCF Connect route](https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/train/route/ventimiglia/monaco) | Easy day trip; book aquarium/major paid sights separately |
| Dolceacqua | Line 7 bus from Ventimiglia; summer timetable shows about 15–20 min to Dolceacqua | Fare not exposed on official timetable | Excellent half/full day; add Rossese tasting |
| Apricale | Line 7 branch / connection via Isolabona; fewer direct trips | Fare not found | Works as a half day only with timetable discipline or private car |
| Ventimiglia | Regional/SNCF train; short coastal hop from Bordighera/Sanremo | Dynamic Trenitalia/SNCF fare | Good market/old-town add-on; check market day separately |
| Albenga / Laigueglia | Regional train east from Alassio/Finale | Dynamic fare; official Trenitalia search | Good next stop; overnight if adding Roman/medieval sightseeing |
| Genoa | Regional/Intercity along the Genoa–Ventimiglia line | Dynamic fare and timetable | Long day trip possible, but an overnight is better for museums/food |
| Nice | TER from Ventimiglia; use SNCF timetable | €10.60 Nice–Ventimiglia full fare in the published page, route/date rules apply | Better as a separate base if flying out of Nice; possible day trip from Sanremo |

## 12. Useful tips

### Real trip cost example — two adults, three nights

Illustrative **not a quote**, using published tax and transport anchors only: mid-range room price, meals and lidos are variable and therefore ranges, not fabricated tariffs.

- Accommodation: **not priced here** because 2026/27 hotel rates are date-sensitive and no dates were specified; check live inventory.
- Sanremo city tax in a 3★ hotel: **€2 × 2 adults × 3 nights = €12**, subject to exemptions/cap; [2026 tariff](https://abaco.entrateonline.net/funzioni/download.php?ID=ccda5c041133dc7a26e92266a072311f&auth=874501df9bbd6f34db8e2655ff83da90&type=7c286f6d0234ff480801a1b6a311a42e), checked 2026-09-23.
- Nice Airport → Nice city: **€10 airport fare** on Lignes d’Azur; Nice–Ventimiglia **€10.60 one-way** SNCF full fare; onward Italy fare dynamic/not printed. [Airport](https://www.nice.aeroport.fr/en/directions/public-transport) · [TER](https://www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/trajet-nice-ventimiglia-stazione), checked 2026-09-23.
- Food: budget €–€€ places exist, but no single official average was found. Use the restaurant table as a shortlist, not a cost promise.
- Beach: published evidence ranges from Sanremo component pricing to operator-specific 2026 listini; a town-wide €15/€30/€50 claim would be misleading. **Request the chosen lido’s current two-sunbed price.**

### Safety and common mistakes

- Do not drive into signed historic lanes/ZTLs; use a hotel’s written drop-off instructions.
- Keep phones/wallets secure at crowded stations, markets and festival barriers; no destination-specific scam source was found, so this is standard travel advice.
- Carry water for La Pigna, Bordighera Alta, Dolceacqua and Apricale; stone paving can be slippery after rain.
- Ask whether a beach is sand, shingle, platform or rocks before booking; “beachfront” does not mean sandy.
- For Festival week, expect temporary traffic/parking controls and hotel minimum stays; check municipal notices close to travel.
- Trains and coastal roads can be disrupted by works, storms or landslides. Check [Trenitalia](https://www.trenitalia.com/it/informazioni/infomobilita.html), [RFI notices](https://www.rfi.it/it/news-e-media/infomobilita.html), [SNCF TER works](https://www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/se-deplacer/info-trafic) and Riviera Trasporti before departure.
- Public fountains/toilets: Alassio’s official FAQ lists toilets at Piazza Paccini, the station and marina. Other towns’ current public-toilet maps were not found.
- Luggage storage: Alassio confirms storage at Piazza Don Francesco Della Valle 2; equivalent confirmed facilities in the other towns were not found.

## Commercial hooks

- **Hotels:** sell Sanremo centre/Casino and Foce separately; Bordighera lower town for quiet luxury; Alassio waterfront for sand/family; Finale Marina for beach/no car and Finalborgo for outdoor/culture. Festival week is the strongest compression event; do not promise availability without live inventory.
- **Transfers:** Nice Airport → Sanremo/Bordighera; Ventimiglia → Dolceacqua/Apricale; late-night rail fallback; luggage transfer from station to hill hotels. Price only after live quote.
- **Experiences:** cycle-path bike/e-bike rental; guided La Pigna/Liberty walks; Villa della Pergola ticket; Dolceacqua Rossese tasting; Finalborgo/archaeology walks; climbing/MTB guides; Monaco/Menton rail day-trip planning.
- **Beach products:** 2026 sunbed prices are operator-specific; sell bookable lido inventory only where the operator confirms an exact listino and date.
- **Food products:** market/focaccia tasting, sardenaira and brandacujun food walk, Taggiasca oil/olive visit, Rossese winery day, cooking class. Use real operators; no generic seller names are invented here.
