Dolomites without a car: Ortisei, Cortina, Dobbiaco or Bolzano?

Buses and lifts make it work — if you pick one valley and the hikes you want first.

PROTOTYPE · SEO/GEO article v1 · facts from the EmweGo guides (checked 2026-09-24) · question source: Traveller-questions research A01–A10 (Reddit, forums), 23 Sep 2026 (A06)
Short answer

Yes, the Dolomites work without a car, one valley at a time. Ortisei (Val Gardena) is the strongest car-free base: lifts to Seceda and Alpe di Siusi, frequent buses, and a free Val Gardena Guest Pass for valley buses at partner hotels. Dobbiaco / San Candido is on the Val Pusteria railway, near Lago di Braies (bus 442). Cortina is reached by bus from Venice. Bolzano is the rail hub — good for arrivals and a city stay, but every hike starts with a bus ride. Don’t try Seceda and Braies in the same two days — they’re in different valleys.

Bus 442 from Dobbiaco or Villabassa (439 from Monguelfo); book in peak season (1 Jul–15 Sep).

For arrivals and a city stay yes; for hiking, a valley base like Ortisei saves hours on buses.
