Trains in Italy: Trenitalia or Italo, regional tickets and how to validate them

High-speed between big cities, regional trains for everything else — and one validation rule that catches tourists out.

PROTOTYPE · SEO/GEO article v1 · facts from the EmweGo guides (checked 2026-09-23) · question source: Traveller-questions research A01–A10 (Reddit, forums), 23 Sep 2026 (A01)
Short answer

Between the big cities take a high-speed train — Trenitalia Frecciarossa or Italo; they’re similar in comfort, so compare time, price and fare conditions for your date (Rome–Florence about 1 h 25, Florence–Bologna 37 min, Rome–Naples 55 min). Smaller towns are served only by Trenitalia regional trains. Paper regional tickets must be validated in the station machines before departure; digital regional tickets validate automatically at your train’s scheduled departure. Without a valid ticket you pay the fare plus a fine.

Travellers advise not to book a fixed-fare train right after landing at Malpensa or Fiumicino — passport queues vary. Leave a buffer or buy after you’re through.
