Where to stay in Venice: San Marco, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro — or Mestre?
In Venice the exact address matters more than the district: bridges, boat stops and your arrival point decide.

Short answer
For a first visit of 2–3 nights, stay in the historic city: San Marco for the main monuments, Cannaregio for bacari, canal walks and — at its western end — the station, Dorsoduro for art, the Zattere and quieter evenings, San Polo for Rialto. Mestre can save money or suit a car, but count the daily commute and the evening return. With luggage, choose by the route from your arrival point (Santa Lucia station or Piazzale Roma) to the door. The city charges a stay tax per person per night, for up to five nights.

Closest to the Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and central walks. Busy corridors and higher demand — check the street’s noise.
A separate municipal tax (not the Access Fee): per person, per night, for up to five consecutive nights, with reductions and exemptions. The rate depends on the property’s category, location and season — EmweGo shows it in the total price.
