How do you avoid tourist-trap restaurants in Italy — and what should you eat in each region?

Read the menu, not the photos. Then order what the region is actually known for.

Short answer

Walk one or two streets away from the monument, then judge the menu: short, seasonal, in Italian first, with regional dishes — not pizza, carbonara and lasagne everywhere. Be wary of photo menus, staff pulling you in and no prices. Check the bill lines before ordering: coperto (cover) is legal in most regions if it’s on the menu, but banned in Lazio (Rome). Coffee is cheaper standing at the bar than seated on a piazza. Order local: carbonara and carciofi in Rome, ribollita and bistecca in Florence, cicchetti in Venice, risotto alla milanese in Milan, pizza in Naples, focaccia and pesto in Liguria, orecchiette in Puglia, pasta alla Norma in Sicily.

There’s no magic number of blocks. Leave the square with the monument and look at the next few streets.

Coffee: bar vs table

Standing at the bar is usually cheapest; a table on a famous piazza can cost several times more. Check the price list before sitting.

Ask before you order

Fish by weight (“S.Q.” or per 100 g), bottled water and bread can add up. Ask the price of the whole dish.
