Start here: Florence in walkable clusters

Florence is compact: four walking clusters on two banks of the Arno. Book one or two rigid slots per day, group sights by bank and leave time to eat and rest.

First visit: 3 nights in one base

Verified 2026-09-17EN from RU source
The starting recommendation for a first trip is 3 nights in one base — usually two full days plus the arrival and departure edges. With a late arrival and an early departure, the third night does not become a third full day.

Art lovers: Uffizi, Accademia, Bargello, San Marco.
Couples: Oltrarno evenings, Arno views, sunset from the hills.
Families: one main museum per day + MUS.E family programmes.
Rail travellers: an easy base for Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Bologna and the Rome–Milan–Venice line.
Rural Tuscany fans: do the city first, then move base to the countryside.

Book-ahead anchors

Book the rigid slots before you fill the dayOrder by how fixed the schedule is: if you want a climb, book the Brunelleschi dome slot first (it cannot be changed or cancelled), then the Uffizi and Accademia. If David is the reason for your trip, start with the Accademia. Leave time for security and walking between slots, and never arrive at a slot with a suitcase.
Good to know· Time is short

One main paid sight per day is enough

For one day: one main paid visit, the Duomo from outside, Signoria and the river. For two or three days, split the Uffizi and the Accademia if both matter. Two museums in a day is the intensive option, not a minimum.

Editorial benchmark: late April–May and late September–October for combining museums and walks. Winter works well for an art-centred trip, but short days, rain and trade fairs affect the plan. July–August need early walks and a midday break. Choose a specific week rather than a promise of “low season”: winter holidays and Pitti can shift demand.

FLR, Pisa or Bologna: compare the whole trip

Good to know· Choose between

FLR, PSA or BLQ: count door to door, not the flight

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
For a Florence-only trip FLR is usually easiest on the ground; PSA can win with a direct flight, a lower fare or a stop in Pisa/western Tuscany; BLQ adds a change at Bologna Centrale and wins if the flight itself is much better or Bologna is on your route. This is a choice by your tickets, not an airport quality ranking.
For each option add: flight with all bags + transport both ways for everyone + a possible extra night + late check-in/transfer. Compare door-to-door time and the hours actually left in Florence. Don't book a rigid high-speed ticket right after landing time. For a group, taxi cost is split, while transit tickets and luggage supplements add up.

Required terminal time (per your airline) minus the trip from your door, waiting and a delay buffer. GEST states ~20 minutes to the central part, but that isn't from every hotel nor to check-in. Practical benchmark for a central stay: 45–60 minutes for the ground chain, on top of the pre-flight buffer. Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Family: a flat, short route between home and main stops; SMN–centre or San Marco as search zones — the quiet room, lift and stroller space decide.
Solo: clear arrival, a working host contact, late entry and an easy way back after dinner; no area guarantees safety.
Older travellers: short daily walks and a chance to rest; SMN if trains matter, the centre if monuments do. Check bath/shower height, steps and lift.

Build the walk from the real station exit to the door, check crossings and Street View, then ask the hotel to confirm. A lift may start after a staircase or skip the top floor: ask the floor, steps before/after the lift and cabin size. A short walk to an old building without a lift can be worse than a longer flat one. A “central” address doesn't mean a taxi reaches the door.

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
With an early train, a late rail arrival or heavy bags, a stay by SMN is practical. With a late FLR flight, T2/taxi and check-in matter more than the word SMN in the listing. Read recent reviews about the window side and soundproofing — don't label the whole area noisy.

Getting around: walk first

Inside the old town you walk. Use the tram for the airport and outer districts, taxis for luggage, and keep a car for the Tuscan countryside.

Walking: the main way around

Transport option· Quick answer

Florence without a car

Verified 2026-09-17EN from RU source
Base walking clusters: Duomo–San Lorenzo–San Marco; Signoria–Uffizi–Santa Croce; Ponte Vecchio–Pitti–Santo Spirito; San Niccolò–panorama. Don't cross the Arno after every sight. For Piazzale Michelangelo choose a walk you can manage or the current bus/taxi — going down counts too. The tram helps for the airport and outer districts, not for every walk in the old town.

Buses/trams help for the airport, outskirts and long approaches; check routes to the hills separately. Validate a paper ticket; activate an app ticket before riding — having it on your phone doesn't mean it's activated. On T2 don't pay an “airport surcharge” without an official basis.

Tap a bank card/phone on the reader and wait for the success signal at every boarding. On the city network, repeat taps within the validity don't create a new ticket. One card/device = one passenger; your phone and physical card are not the same medium. On extraurban/mixed routes you must also tap out — don't carry the city rule over to rural buses. Tip Tap doesn't cover trains.

ZTL: camera-controlled limited traffic zone

Verified 2026-09-17EN from RU source
Not just paid parking. Usual ZTL: Mon–Fri 07:30–20:00, Sat 07:30–16:00; the seasonal night ZTL is separate, and “Sunday” doesn't cancel a ban continuing from Saturday night. Before entering, get your hotel's permitted route and number-plate registration procedure and a confirmation. A room booking is not a permit; your sat-nav doesn't check permits. Bus lanes and pedestrian areas never become allowed. Even SMN is not entirely outside the ZTL; check the separate Scudo Verde rules for your car.

Mobility on Florence streets

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Uneven paving, narrow pavements, kerbs and the slopes to Michelangelo/San Miniato hinder strollers and wheelchairs; historic riverside streets aren't guaranteed flat. For older travellers shorten distances, add seated breaks and stick to one bank per block. Uffizi and Pitti have accessible routes (ask for the right entrance, lift and help); San Marco has a mobile ramp on request and an inside lift platform; the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo has lifts. The dome, Campanile and Arnolfo tower have no lift. Book RFI Sala Blu assistance before a train.

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Open the carrier's live status and station announcements; for a strike read the notice of Trenitalia, Italo, AT or GEST specifically — there are no universal guaranteed hours for all modes, and an old alert doesn't prove your service is cancelled. If cancelled, ask the operator for continuation or refund under your ticket; keep the notice, ticket and receipts. Don't board another operator's train on the old ticket, and don't assume every taxi or hotel is refunded. Tell your next hotel your new arrival time; rebook museum slots separately. On long delays, store bags, stay close and watch for a platform change. If city transport fails, walk in the centre or take an official taxi.

Tax Free and getting purchases home

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Tax Free applies to eligible travellers residing outside the EU: minimum €70.01 per VAT receipt, electronic processing and customs confirmation of export within the deadline. Ask the shop before paying about participation, passport data, commission, the OTELLO document/code and the refund total — the till receipt alone doesn't finish it. Leaving via another EU country? Find out where to validate export and don't check the goods in before the inspection. Pack bottles and cosmetics against leaks; check cabin rules and import limits; get a written quote for shipping home.

The city is better for workshops and walking between shops; the outlet suits a targeted list of brands. Palazzo Vecchio: pick a MUS.E family programme

Partially verified · 2026-09-19EN from RU source
MUS.E runs Marzocco for ages 4–7 and Biribissi for 8–14 — the activity's age range, not a limit on general entry. “La favola della tartaruga con la vela” lasts 70 minutes; language, day, activity price and separate entry are checked when choosing. Don't promise a toddler-adapted programme without checking. On a rainy day book an interior — Boboli and stair towers don't replace it.

Place· Family day

A family day built around one museum

Partially verified · 2026-09-19EN from RU source
Ages 4–14 depending on the MUS.E activity; one short museum block. Leave the rest of the day for food, rest and a short look at the centre. Boboli and the slope to Piazzale Michelangelo add effort — optional. For two days, split a big art collection and the children's programme. Editorial scenario, not a ticket.
Place· Pace

Pace, breaks and gardens

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
One main museum per day and a few specific works, then food and rest. The Uffizi can work with an interested child in a 60–90 minute visit (editorial scenario). For a break try Giardino dell'Orticoltura; Giardino delle Rose is lovely but on a slope. Boboli is a paid garden with lots of walking — not an automatic playground substitute.

How to eat & avoid traps

Good to know· Coperto & tipping

Check the bill before you order

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Full bill = dishes + drinks + any stated coperto/servizio. Coperto is a cover/table charge, not a tip; mancia (tip) is voluntary with no fixed percentage. For steak or fish by weight, get the weight before cooking. Menu photos or a location by a sight don't prove bad food — check price clarity, ingredients and terms. Also check water, table vs counter and kitchen closing before ordering.

San Lorenzo / Mercato Centrale — varied tastes and a quick lunch (food hall and traditional market keep different hours). Sant'Ambrogio — local lunch/dinner. Breakfast, brunch and late dinner

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
A local breakfast is coffee and a sweet pastry — not an obligation; for savoury look for a daytime menu. Late dinner: confirm last kitchen order and a table ahead; venue hours aren't kitchen hours. Book the evening restaurant for your real arrival time and keep a simple back-up snack. An editorial 19:00–21:00 dinner benchmark doesn't replace a venue's hours.

Morning: one pre-booked museum (Uffizi or Accademia) or the Duomo complex with your chosen climb.
Afternoon: Piazza della Signoria → Ponte Vecchio → lunch on Via dei Neri or at Mercato Centrale.
Evening: the Arno and squares; Piazzale Michelangelo if you still have the energy.

Day 2 — Uffizi / Signoria + Oltrarno: Uffizi morning → Signoria → Ponte Vecchio → Santo Spirito, San Frediano → sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo or dinner in Oltrarno.

Italy in 5–7 days: which cities should you visit?

Two bases beat four: Rome + Florence, or Milan + Venice, Verona or Lake Como.

Florence is Tuscany's rail hub: Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Bologna work as day trips; the countryside, Cinque Terre and other cities deserve their own base.

Half a day is enough for the outside of Piazza dei Miracoli and a short walk if the timetable suits; the tower, cathedral, museums and lunch make it a full day. The train beats a car for Pisa alone — no parking near the historic centre.

Lucca

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
A walk on the walls and around the compact town is a day in itself. Pisa + Lucca works with an early start but shortens both — don't add a big Florence museum the same day.

Route· Method

How to plan any rail day trip

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Firenze SMN → actual destination station → way to the centre → visit time → return train with a buffer. Compare a direct regional train with a faster one; the shortest time in a search isn't the whole trip. Several such trips? Stay with easy access to SMN.

RFI · Firenze SMN ↗

Siena, San Gimignano and Chianti

Route· Day trip

Siena

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Worth a full day for Piazza del Campo, the city districts and the cathedral complex by interest. Compare the bus to the centre and the train with the onward climb. Siena as a base suits southern Tuscany and evening atmosphere; Florence is better for big museums and main-line trains.

San Gimignano

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Towers and a compact historic centre. Without a car, check the chain via Poggibonsi and the Autolinee Toscane bus. Siena + San Gimignano in a day is easier with organised transport; on your own, count the connections — it won't be leisurely.

One or two pre-arranged wineries, not every village. A bus to Greve doesn't reach any estate. Tasting without driving: a tour with transport or a booked driver. Example: Antinori nel Chianti Classico, Visita Tinaia — ~1.5 h, IT/EN, €50/adult, non-refundable, transport separate. A tour is simpler logistically; going solo is more flexible once all transport is solved.

Val d'Orcia and the countryside

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Possible as a day trip with organised logistics, but for sunrises, several villages and agriturismo rest, sleep closer to the valley. For a countryside stay check distance to a restaurant, reception hours, car-free access and the actual transfer.
Editorial patterns: Florence 3 nights + Chianti/Val d'Orcia 2–3; or Florence only for a pure city trip. Florence → Siena → Val d'Orcia if you continue south; the reverse if you return or fly from the north.

FeelFlorence · reaching Tuscany's highlights ↗

Cinque Terre

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
A day trip means a long ride and changes; for trails, the sea and several villages, 2 nights in a new base (check park access) make more sense. Florence → Pisa → Cinque Terre: Pisa as a half-day stop only if luggage is solved, not another mandatory hotel.

FeelFlorence · reaching Tuscany's highlights ↗

Place· Next city

Rome, Venice, Milan: separate bases

Verified 2026-09-18EN from RU source
Technically reachable by train in a day, but on a first trip better as separate bases. Example: Florence 3 nights + Rome 3–4 or Venice 2–3. Bologna can stay a day trip. Choose the next destination by geography and useful hours, not a rigid chain of cities.

Formula: room × nights + tax per taxable guest + airport/station → door → back + chosen entries + food/drinks/coperto + luggage storage/parking.
Example of checkable parts (not a full budget): two adults, 3 nights in a 3★, T2 both ways for both, Uffizi in advance and Brunelleschi for both = €36 tax + €8 T2 + €58 Uffizi + €60 Duomo = €162 on top of room and food. In a 4★ the tax is €42, in a 5★ €48. A Cibreino lunch of pappa + lampredotto = €28 before drinks — not the city's average bill.

Family, couple, solo, budget, luxury, luggage

Verified 2026-09-17EN from RU source
Family: lift/steps, A/C, family-room size, stroller storage; alternate museum and open space.
Couple: Oltrarno/Sant'Ambrogio for evenings or the centre for short walks; a quiet room beats a “romantic district”.
Solo: simple route from station/airport, clear late entry and evening return.
Budget: compare the total incl. transport and tax; an outer base only with real savings on the same dates.
Luxury: room category, view, door-to-door transfer, concierge and car rules — not just stars.
Four adults: confirm the bed setup in writing.
Big luggage: short last leg and a lift; hills, bridges and cobbles count. One wheelchair symbol on a building listing doesn't prove an accessible room.

FAQ

Short answers to the questions travellers actually ask.

Before you go

When is the best time to visit Florence?

Late April–May and late September–October combine museums and walks best. July–August average highs are about 32 °C (LaMMA normals): walk early, pause at midday. Check Pitti fair dates before booking the room.

How many days do I need?

Two full days for a first visit is the benchmark — usually 3 nights in one base. Two nights with a late arrival may give only one full day.

Is Florence good as a base for Tuscany?

Yes for separate rail day trips (Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Arezzo, Bologna). For a rural stay (Chianti, Val d'Orcia) a new base is better.

Arriving and getting around

How do I get from Florence Airport to the centre?

Tram T2 (€2 / 90 min) towards San Marco Università, or an official taxi at a fixed €28 to the central tariff zone (€30 holidays, €32 night).

Can I catch T2 for a very early flight?

Compare your required airport arrival with the first departure (05:10 from San Marco) and the walk to the stop. If you need to leave before the service starts, book a taxi or transfer in advance.

Do I need a car in Florence?

Not for the city core — it's walkable, and the ZTL cameras make driving risky. Pick up a car for the rural leg.

What are the ZTL hours?

Usually Mon–Fri 07:30–20:00 and Sat 07:30–16:00; a seasonal night ZTL applies separately. Get your hotel's permitted route and plate registration before entering.

Where can I leave a suitcase after checkout?

Ask the hotel first; otherwise KiPoint at SMN (published 07:00–21:00). Museums aren't all-day luggage stores.

Tickets and museums

Does the Firenzecard include the Duomo and the tram?

No. The Firenzecard (€85, 72 h) excludes the Duomo complex and transport.

Does the Firenzecard guarantee entry to the Uffizi?

No — you still need to book the relevant slot; the card doesn't create one.

Is the Florence Cathedral free?

Yes, the cathedral itself is free, but it's closed to tourist visits on Sundays and religious holidays. The dome, bell tower, Baptistery, museum and Santa Reparata need a Duomo pass.

How many steps is the Duomo dome?

463 steps to the dome, 414 up Giotto's bell tower — no lifts. The dome slot can't be changed or cancelled.

Are museums open on Mondays?

Uffizi, Pitti and usually the Accademia are closed on Mondays. Museo Novecento opens (closed Thursdays instead).

Is the first Sunday of the month free?

Often for state museums only, with longer queues, and no bookings at the Accademia that day.

Staying and eating

Where should I stay without a car?

Choose one of six bases by your first/last journey and evenings: Duomo–Signoria, SMN, San Lorenzo–San Marco, Santa Croce–Sant'Ambrogio, Santo Spirito–San Frediano or San Niccolò.

Can four adults share one room?

Ask for the real bed layout in writing — a “quadruple” can mean a double plus a sofa bed.

How much is the Florence tourist tax?

€3.50–8 per person per night in hotels by star rating (3★ €6), max 7 consecutive nights, under-12s exempt.

Where can I eat cheaply near SMN?

Compare schiacciata or the Mercato Centrale food hall with published menus — not every market counter is budget.

What is coperto? Should I tip?

Coperto is a per-person cover charge, not a tip. Tipping (mancia) is voluntary with no fixed percentage.

How is bistecca alla fiorentina priced?

Usually by weight. Agree the weight, price per kg/100 g and the total before it's cooked; it's often shared.
