Choose the kind of shopping day first: city streets for design, fashion and local finds, or a dedicated outlet trip with transport, time and Tax Free steps planned in advance.
CITY SHOPPING
Find the right shopping context
Italy’s best shopping days are district-led. Pick the product and neighbourhood before you start collecting addresses.
MILAN
Fashion & design
Quadrilatero for luxury, Brera for galleries and independent design, Corso Buenos Aires for a broader high-street mix.
ROME
Luxury & local finds
Spanish Steps and Via del Corso cover different price points; add a market or artisan stop rather than crossing the whole city.
FLORENCE
Leather, crafts & jewellery
Compare workshop provenance, materials and return terms. Separate a craft-focused walk from a museum-heavy day.
OUTLETS
Make an outlet a real day trip
Compare the complete door-to-door cost and return journey, not only the discount headline. If you live outside the EU, ask about Tax Free at the outlet before paying; an outlet discount does not automatically include a VAT refund.
PIEDMONT · FROM MILAN / GENOA / TURIN
Serravalle Designer Outlet
A full shopping-day destination in Serravalle Scrivia. Pick your transport and return first, then shortlist the stores you actually want.
Plan your Serravalle visit ↓
Getting there
From Milan: official partner shuttles run from Milano Centrale and other city stops. Book the outward and return seats together; check the current stop, fare and last departure.
From Genoa or Turin: the outlet lists a Genoa bus option; from Turin compare rail + final bus with driving. Verify the day’s timetable rather than assuming a direct shuttle.
By train: Trenitalia's “Serravalle Outlet” destination combines regional rail with the final bus from Serravalle Scrivia, Arquata Scrivia or Novi Ligure. Check the connection in both directions.
By car: use Via della Moda 1, Serravalle Scrivia. The outlet lists free parking and estimates about 1 hour from Milan, 45 minutes from Genoa and under 90 minutes from Turin, traffic permitting.
At the outlet
Check the day: the outlet currently lists 10:00–20:00 daily, but confirm your date, especially around holidays.
Set a shortlist: check the current store directory and map; availability, sizes and extra offers vary by boutique.
Ask at Guest Services: hands-free shopping, family and accessibility services are listed by the outlet; confirm any booking or charge before relying on them.
Breaks: food and café options are on site, so you can plan a full day without leaving the centre.
Money & return
Extra discounts: a Fashion Passport or loyalty offer may apply only in participating stores. Check eligibility and whether it combines with the item price.
Tax Free: residents outside the EU should ask the store for the invoice and form before paying. Keep purchases and documents for customs validation when leaving the EU.
Protect the return: leave time for Guest Services, collecting bags and reaching your shuttle or train+bus connection.
Planning information checked September 2026. Recheck opening hours, transport, services and offers for your date; no discount or connection is guaranteed.
MILAN AREA
Scalo Milano
Convenient for a shorter Milan-area outing. Verify the current shuttle, brand directory and closing time.
PIEDMONT
Vicolungo The Style Outlets
Compare the full route from Milan or Turin and confirm the last return before shopping.
TUSCANY
The Mall Firenze
A luxury-focused option near Florence. Reserve transport when dates are busy and keep a return buffer.
ROME
Castel Romano
Plan around the transfer and heat, especially in summer. Check official opening hours and current services.
VENICE
Noventa di Piave
A dedicated Veneto outlet day; compare the journey from Venice with the time available in the city.
ITALY · VAT REFUND
How Tax Free works in Italy
Tax Free is a refund or direct relief of Italian VAT on eligible goods taken out of the EU—not an automatic extra discount at the till. The rules depend on where you live, not just your passport.
WHO
Resident outside the EU
Travellers resident or domiciled outside the EU may qualify. Bring a passport or equivalent document showing your non-EU residence. EU citizens living outside the EU may qualify if they can prove that residence.
ITALY THRESHOLD
More than €70
The VAT-inclusive total must be over €70 on each Tax Free invoice. Do not assume purchases from different shops or separate invoices can be combined.
GOODS & DEADLINE
Take the goods out
Goods must be for personal or family use and leave the EU by the end of the third month after the invoice date. Customs may ask to see the goods.
At the shop or outlet: ask before paying whether it issues an Italian Tax Free invoice. Give your passport/residence details and check the goods, name and document number on the invoice. For an OTELLO electronic invoice, keep the copy with its request code.
Before leaving the EU: keep the goods accessible with the invoice and travel documents. Obtain customs validation at the EU exit point; in Italy this may be a digital OTELLO validation. If the goods will be checked in, confirm the airport procedure before bag drop.
Claim the refund: follow the shop's or Tax Free operator's instructions after validation. Customs validates the export but does not pay the refund. An operator may deduct a service fee, so the amount received can be lower than the VAT shown on the invoice.
Fashion, design, leather, gifts or outlet discounts. Pick one main goal and a realistic budget.
2 · CHECK
Verify details
Opening hours, stock, sale dates, transport, baggage space and return policy can change.
3 · RETURN
Protect the journey home
Plan the last connection, keep valuables closed in crowds and save receipts offline.
Planning note: prices, opening hours, outlet shuttles, sale dates and Tax Free rules change. Confirm the official provider or retailer before travelling.
