Milan: choose the shape of your trip first
Milan works best as a set of walkable clusters linked by metro. Pick one or two anchor visits per day, keep lunch inside the same cluster and leave one flexible block. For a first visit, two full days is the editorial benchmark; a third day earns its place with art, design or shopping.

When to go: plan around Milan's event calendar
Milan's demand is driven by fairs, fashion and design weeks, matches and sales more than by weather. Check the calendar before choosing the hotel.

A planning view: fashion weeks and trade fairs move hotel prices more than the weather.
| Month | Weather | Crowds and hotel pressure |
|---|---|---|
| January | Cold, fog possible | Men’s fashion week brings a short premium; otherwise quiet |
| February | Cold to cool | Women’s Fashion Week — a major pressure window |
| March | Early spring, showers | Fashion spillover and trade fairs; Rho/Fiera hotels tighten |
| April | Mild, good for walking | Salone del Mobile 13–18 Apr 2027 (public days 17–18) — the strongest hotel-pressure week |
| May | Warm, long days | Trade fairs and weekend breaks |
| June | Warm to hot, storms | Men’s fashion week and outdoor culture |
| July | Hot and humid | Business demand drops outside fairs; weekends still date-sensitive |
| August | Hottest | Many businesses cut hours — check before you promise a restaurant or museum |
| September | Warm — ideal city weather | Women’s Fashion Week and fairs can spike prices |
| October | Mild, wetter | Big trade-fair and congress season; Rho hotels sell out first |
| November | Cool, grey | Lower demand; isolated fair spikes |
| December | Cold, festive lights | Christmas and shopping weekends |

Getting there: compare the ground trip, not only the flight
Milan has three main airports and each connects differently. If two flights cost about the same, pick the one with the simplest journey to your hotel door — especially for a late arrival or early departure.
| Airport | Best link to Milan | Time / price (current) | Late arrival |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linate (LIN) | Metro M4 direct into the city | Mi1–Mi3 ticket €2.20 / 90 min; contactless on M4 | NM4 night bus Linate ↔ San Cristoforo |
| Malpensa (MXP) | Malpensa Express to Cadorna or Centrale | T1: ~37 min Cadorna, ~51 min Centrale · PAY&GO same-day return €25 | Last T2 → Milan ~22:37; check live timetable |
| Bergamo (BGY) | Direct coaches to Milano Centrale | Autostradale, Flibco, Orioshuttle, Terravision — traffic-dependent | Night: limited airside-free area only; compare an airport hotel |
Summary of the source-ready cards below (verified 6–7 September 2026). Timetables and fares are high-freshness facts.

Where to stay: pick the base by trip purpose
Twelve areas from the Milan research master. This is a decision matrix, not a price ranking — hotel availability and nightly rates depend on your dates.
| Area | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Centro / Duomo | Short first visit, walking sightseeing | Highest demand around the square |
| Brera | Art and a polished city evening | Book early; central prices |
| Cadorna / Magenta / Sant’Ambrogio | West centre, Last Supper, Malpensa Express link | — |
| Navigli | Canal-side evenings | Check noise for your street |
| Tortona | Design and its own venues | Separate cluster from the centre |
| Porta Nuova / Garibaldi | Modern Milan and rail connections | — |
| Isola | Local evenings | Check the walk from the station |
| Centrale | Intercity trains and airport coaches | The exact street matters more than the word “station” |
| Porta Venezia | City break, walks and evenings | — |
| CityLife | MiCo congress centre, west-side business | Not the same as Fiera Rho |
| San Siro | A specific match or event only | Check entry and the way back |
| Porta Romana | South Milan, spa and a calmer stay | — |
Source: MIL-GC-20260917-001 · decision guide · verified 2026-09-17 · EN from RU source. Fiera Rho and MiCo are different venues — do not pick a hotel by the single word “fair”.
Matching the area to who is travelling
Couple: Brera/centre or Navigli depending on the evening you want and your noise tolerance.
Solo: a clear late return and check-in; no “safety ratings” by district name.
Budget: add room + tax + daily transport — a far-out base is not always cheaper in total.
Luxury: check the specific service, category, room size and view.
Event visit: the exact venue, day and entrance first, then the metro and final leg.
Self check-in apartments
Family base: the route and the exact room

Staying for Salone or a fair week?
Getting around: metro for long moves, walking inside clusters
For a normal city trip you do not need a car. Use one contactless card per person on ATM, and remember that trains (Trenord, S-lines, Malpensa Express) are separate systems.
| ATM ticket (Mi1–Mi3) | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Single | €2.20 | Valid 90 minutes |
| 24 hours | €7.60 | Contactless caps daily spend at this level from your first ride |
| 3 service days | €15.50 | Three consecutive service days — not the same as 72 hours |
From MIL-GC-20260917-005 (research ready, 2026-09-18). Four separate singles cost €8.80 vs €7.60 for 24h — the saving depends on your real rides and zones. These fares do not cover Malpensa Express or the BGY coach.
Don't assume one contactless tap works on every Milan system

| Last Supper (Cenacolo Vinciano) | Compulsory, timed | 15 minutes of viewing · ticket + ID at the office 30 min before · new releases Wednesdays at noon for the following week |
| Duomo | Timed ticket | Rooftops-only ≠ Cathedral; Combo = Cathedral + Terraces + Museum |
| Pinacoteca di Brera | Reservation required (also on free first Sundays) | Grande Brera ticket adds Palazzo Citterio for the day + 6 days · closed Mondays |
| La Scala museum | Standard ticket | Auditorium view only when no rehearsal/event |
| Leonardo3 | Standard ticket | Adult €16, reduced €12 for listed categories |

Travel answer
How do I get tickets to see The Last Supper?
Things to see: fixed slots first, walks around them
Reserve the timed visits, then fill the gaps with walkable, free or flexible stops in the same cluster.
Book first
The Last Supper: book before you build the day around it
Book on EmweGo · guided packages that include Last Supper entry · Free stop nearby: San Maurizio.
Duomo: rooftops only or the full complex?
No suitcases in the cathedral; leave bulky bags at the hotel. The lift reduces the climb but does not guarantee step-free access to every part of the terraces — check the official Accessibility page first.
Pick the Duomo experience first, then build the central walk around the booked slot.
Duomo: dress, shoes and bags before you queue
Brera now works as a two-site art visit
Reserve Brera first, then add aperitivo or pick a hotel around Brera/Moscova.
A La Scala museum ticket does not guarantee an auditorium view
Flexible and by interest
Castello Sforzesco is still useful on Monday

Itineraries: 1 to 4 days without padding
Editorial scenarios, not statistics. Fixed-ticket attractions set the order of the day, not the list.
Two days in Milan: centre, Leonardo, Brera and one evening district
Day 2: Last Supper only with a real slot → Santa Maria delle Grazie / San Maurizio if open → Brera / Pinacoteca if booked → Quadrilatero if shopping matters → Porta Nuova / Gae Aulenti / Isola for the evening.
If the Last Supper is sold out, swap in another Leonardo stop instead of paying a reseller for a whole day.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 days
Two: historic centre one day; art/Brera or Leonardo plus your chosen evening the other.
Three: design/Tortona, modern Porta Nuova/Isola or a museum by interest; families keep a park and rest.
Four: another city interest or one day to Como/Bergamo — not both long trips.
One night gives an evening, not two full days after a late arrival. For a fair or match, block the event first.
3 calendar days with arrival and departure
Day 2: La Scala museum and one Leonardo museum (Leonardo3 by La Scala, or the Gallerie Leonardo at the Science Museum — alternatives, not both), around your booked Last Supper time. No slot? San Maurizio.
Day 3: Castello courtyards → Parco Sempione → Arco della Pace; collect bags with a buffer for the train/airport coach.
Photo route: spires and covered arcade
Travel answer
Italy in 5–7 days: which cities should you visit?
Day trips & next stops
Milan is a city trip on its own — a lake is not compulsory. When you add a place, decide first whether it is a day trip or a new hotel base. Classic chain: Milan → Lake Como → Venice.
Como, Bergamo and onward travel
Bergamo: a day trip on a free day with checked trains. Verona: a next hotel base if you continue into Veneto/Garda.
Milan → Como: pick one outdoor day
2. Lenno / Greenway — train to Como + bus C110 to the west shore; the full Greenway is its own walking day (not for strollers).
3. Resinelli / Parco Valentino — train to Lecco + the right Line 7 bus; rare service.
Build the return from the last link; don’t combine all three in one day.

The full price of the trip
City tax: from 1 April 2026 the municipal table sets €3–12 per person per night depending on the accommodation category; under-18s are exempt. Confirm your category in the offer — don’t carry January rates into autumn.
Food: read the whole menu — dishes, drinks, coperto (a fixed per-person charge, not a tip), possible servizio. Coffee al banco costs less than at a table.

FAQ: quick answers
Short answers from the Milan Guide FAQ tab (source-scoped). Full context is in the linked cards above.
Arriving
Which Milan airport gives me the easiest ground trip into the city?
The links differ: Linate has M4 metro, Malpensa has direct rail, and Bergamo is usually served by direct coaches to Milano Centrale.
Should I take Malpensa Express to Cadorna or Centrale?
Choose the station that makes your total trip to or from the hotel easiest, not just the shortest train.
How late can I travel between Malpensa T2 and Centrale by train?
The current last Malpensa Express from T2 toward Milan is around 22:37 — check the live timetable if you land late.
How do I get from Bergamo Airport to central Milan?
For most travellers the simplest public option is a direct airport coach to Milano Centrale.
Do I need to go through central Milan between Bergamo and Malpensa?
No. Orio Shuttle runs a direct Bergamo–Orio–Monza–Malpensa line.
Moving around
Can I reach Linate with a normal Milan ticket or contactless card?
Yes. M4 connects Linate with the metro; the Mi1–Mi3 ticket and ATM contactless work.
What happens when the Milan metro closes?
Night replacement services for M1–M4 run every night, with extra night routes on selected weekend and pre-holiday nights.
Do I need a car in Milan?
Not for a normal city trip. If you arrive by car, check vehicle restrictions for the date, parking access and the route to the hotel.
Sights & tickets
Do I need to book The Last Supper before I arrive?
Yes — reservation is compulsory, viewing lasts 15 minutes. Bring ID and the ticket and be at the office 30 minutes early.
Rooftop-only or Duomo Combo ticket?
Rooftop-only if the view is the goal; Combo if you also want the Cathedral and the Duomo Museum.
What should I know before entering the Duomo?
Dress appropriately for the Cathedral, wear practical shoes for the Rooftops and don’t arrive with bulky luggage.
Is Castello Sforzesco worth it on a Monday or a low-budget day?
The museums close on Monday, but the courtyards are free and open every day — combine them with Parco Sempione.
Does a La Scala museum ticket guarantee a view of the auditorium?
Only when no rehearsal, performance or event is taking place.
Do I need to reserve Pinacoteca di Brera?
Yes. The Grande Brera ticket adds Palazzo Citterio the same day or within the next six days.
Triennale or Fondazione Prada?
Triennale for Italian design and an easy Sempione stop; Fondazione Prada for contemporary art and OMA architecture in south Milan.
Is there a free stop near the Last Supper?
Yes — San Maurizio, when it is open.
Food & evenings
What should I eat for a genuinely Milanese meal?
Risotto alla milanese, ossobuco and cotoletta alla milanese.
Where should I try classic pizza al trancio?
Spontini on Via Gaspare Spontini is the best-known historic reference point.
Which pizzeria is worth planning a special dinner around?
Confine — ranked No. 1 in Italy for 2026 by 50 Top Pizza.
Is Milan worth planning a Michelin-starred dinner around?
Yes. The 2026 Michelin selection gives Milan a deep starred scene.
Which neighbourhood for an evening out?
Navigli for canal-side energy, Brera for a polished aperitivo, Isola for a more alternative, music-led night.
De Montel or QC Spa Milano?
De Montel when the thermal complex is the main activity near San Siro; QC for a central Porta Romana stop or an evening spa.
Shopping
Where can I buy several different things near the Duomo?
Rinascente gathers many categories in one building; Corso Vittorio Emanuele II works for a walk between shops.
Is there an outlet inside Milan?
Yes, DMAG — a multi-brand city outlet. Stock and hours differ by branch.
What’s open on Sunday?
Check each place: Rinascente opens Sundays; DMAG Manzoni/Bigli open, Forcella and Rusted Vintage closed.
When are the official sales?
Lombardy sets winter and summer sale periods; in 2026 summer sales started 4 July and could run up to 60 days.
