Sanremo and the Riviera di Ponente

Who it suits and how many nights

Good to know

Best for 2–7 nights

Travellers who want a relaxed coastal base with rail access, sandy or pebble beaches, cycle paths, Belle Époque villas, Ligurian food, and easy France/Monaco day trips. Sanremo is the most versatile base; Alassio is the easiest pure beach stay; Finale Ligure is strongest for outdoor travel; Bordighera is quieter and botanical; the inland villages are best as day trips.
Good to know

Suggested split

3 nights in Sanremo or Bordighera + 2 nights in Alassio or Finale Ligure for a coast-and-outdoor combination. Without a car, use Sanremo/Bordighera for France and Dolceacqua, and Finale/Alassio for the eastern coast.
Good to know

Book ahead

Accommodation for Festival di Sanremo, 16–20 February 2027; Villa della Pergola guided entry; popular 2026 beach clubs in July–August; guided bike, food and inland-wine experiences; late-season or festival transfers. Casino entry itself is free, but gaming is 18+ and has a dress code.

Towns at a glance

Good to know

Sanremo

Largest and liveliest base; Casino, La Pigna, villas, market, beaches, 24-km coastal cycle path and the best public-transport spread.
Good to know

Bordighera

Palm gardens, old town, villas and a quieter waterfront; mainly pebbly beaches and a steep Old Town.
Good to know

Alassio

Fine sandy bay, long promenade, Budello shopping lane, Muretto and a dense hotel/restaurant offer; busiest in summer.
Good to know

Finale Ligure

Three linked centres—Finalmarina, Finalpia and medieval Finalborgo—plus beaches, climbing, caves and mountain biking.
Good to know

Dolceacqua

Inland medieval Doria village, Romanesque bridge and Rossese wine; a practical day trip from Ventimiglia/Bordighera.
Good to know

Apricale

Tiny hill village with stone lanes, a castle/theatre tradition and views; pair with Dolceacqua rather than use as a coast base.

Where to stay

Area choice

Area to stay

Sanremo centre / Casino / Corso Matteotti

Best without a car, for nightlife, restaurants, Casino and shopping. Some streets are pedestrianised and luggage drop-off needs planning. La Pigna is atmospheric but steep and stair-heavy; avoid it for rolling luggage unless the accommodation confirms access.
Area to stay

Sanremo east / Corso Imperatrice / Foce

Better for sea views, gardens and beach access; quieter at night, but farther from the station and uphill routes remain.
Area to stay

Bordighera lower town / Lungomare Argentina

Easiest for sea, restaurants and station access; quieter than Sanremo. Bordighera Alta has character and views but steep lanes and luggage friction.
Area to stay

Alassio waterfront / Budello

Best for sandy beach, family convenience and a dense evening offer; summer prices and noise are higher. Solva is panoramic and quieter but needs a taxi/car for luggage.
Area to stay

Finalmarina

Easiest beach-and-rail base. Finalborgo: best for history, restaurants and outdoor culture but not on the beach. Finalpia/Varigotti: calmer beach options; local transport or car helps.
Area to stay

Dolceacqua / Apricale

Choose one night only if you want slow inland evenings, wine and hill-village atmosphere. For a first Riviera trip, use them as day trips.

Itineraries

One day

Route

Sanremo day

Station/taxi → San Siro and La Pigna → market lunch with sardenaira/farinata → Casino exterior/interior → Villa Nobel if Tue–Fri → sunset on cycle path or Corso Imperatrice.
Route

Bordighera day

Station → lower town and Lungomare → Sant’Ampelio → Old Town / Marabutto → Villa Garnier or Pallanca if open → dinner in the old town.
Route

Alassio day

Station → Muretto/Budello → beach or marina → Villa della Pergola booked tour → aperitivo by the sea.
Route

Finale day

Station → Finalmarina beach → Finalborgo and walls → Basilica/Santa Caterina → sunset return to the promenade.

Two days

Route

Day 1 Sanremo historic/cultural

La Pigna, Casino, San Siro, Villa Nobel, market and aperitivo.
Route

Day 2 coast/outdoor

Cycle Sanremo–Ospedaletti or Sanremo–Arma; alternatively Bordighera + Dolceacqua by train/bus.

Three days

Good to know

Key points

• Day 1 Sanremo.
Route

Day 2 Bordighera + Dolceacqua

Rail to Bordighera, old town and gardens; continue to Ventimiglia and Line 7 to Dolceacqua if the return timetable works.
Route

Day 3 Monaco or Menton

Early SNCF TER from Ventimiglia; return before the late-service risk.

Rainy day

Villa Nobel, Casino, market, café/pastry crawl, Basilica interiors, Forte Santa Tecla if open, and a pre-booked cooking/food activity. Museums’ current hours should be rechecked the morning of the visit.

Family day

Choose Alassio sand, a short cycle-path segment with NoloBici, lunch early, then an accessible promenade. Finale is good for a beach + Finalborgo pairing, but avoid exposed hill trails in heat or storm.

Without a car / night split

Route

No car

Base in Sanremo for the broadest services; add Bordighera and Dolceacqua; use Finale as a separate eastern base if you want hiking.
Route

3 nights

Sanremo 2 + Bordighera 1 for west/France. 5 nights: Sanremo 2 + Alassio 1 + Finale 2, or Sanremo 3 + Finale 2. Do not move to Apricale for a short stay unless the hotel handles luggage/taxi logistics.

Safety and common mistakes

Good to know

Key points

Checked 2026-09-23 · with notes
• Do not drive into signed historic lanes/ZTLs; use a hotel’s written drop-off instructions.
• Keep phones/wallets secure at crowded stations, markets and festival barriers; no destination-specific scam source was found, so this is standard travel advice.
• Carry water for La Pigna, Bordighera Alta, Dolceacqua and Apricale; stone paving can be slippery after rain.
• Ask whether a beach is sand, shingle, platform or rocks before booking; “beachfront” does not mean sandy.
• For Festival week, expect temporary traffic/parking controls and hotel minimum stays; check municipal notices close to travel.
• Trains and coastal roads can be disrupted by works, storms or landslides. Check, and Riviera Trasporti before departure.
