FAQ

Can I see Tuscany without a car?

Yes for the cities — Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Arezzo are linked by regional trains and buses. The Chianti villages, Val d’Orcia and the Maremma are much easier with a car or a pre-booked driver.

Which airport is better, Pisa or Florence?

Pisa connects by People Mover to Pisa Centrale for trains to Lucca, Florence and the coast; Florence airport is about 20 minutes from the centre by the T2 tram.

Is there a single Tuscany museum pass?

No. Each town sells its own — the OPA SI Pass in Siena, the Lucca Visit Card, the San Gimignano Pass, the Musei Arezzo Pass and the Volterra Card.

When is the Palio di Siena?

On 2 July and 16 August each year, with ceremonies on the days before.

When is the best time to visit Tuscany?

May, June, September and October; July and August are hottest and busiest.

Are the Saturnia hot springs free?

Cascate del Mulino is described by Visit Tuscany as free-access outdoor pools; the nearby thermal resort is paid.

Where should I stay in Tuscany?

Siena for the south, Lucca or Pisa for the north-west, Arezzo or Cortona for the east — or a farm stay in Chianti or Val d’Orcia if you’ll drive.

Do I need to book the Leaning Tower?

Book ahead on the Opera Primaziale Pisana site — climbs run in timed slots.
