Italian Mountains 29 answersOpen the guide →

Can I pick one hotel for all of the Dolomites?

For a short trip limit the radius to one valley. For the western and eastern parts you can split the stay if the number of nights justifies the move. Don't judge transport by straight-line distance: passes, stops and seasonal operation change the route.

How do I choose a mountain base and season?

A mountain area needs its own route and a check of conditions. Start with the purpose (ski, summer, wellness, family), then the valley and season, then the hotel and its last mile.

Are Aosta, Bormio and Livigno part of the Dolomites?

No — they are mountain destinations in their own right: Valle d'Aosta in the western Alps, Bormio and Livigno in the central Alps (Lombardy).

Is there a ranking of the best mountain resorts?

No. Fit depends on season, ski level, family, car and budget; demand levels are evidence-tagged, not a score.

No — the Sellaronda is a ski circuit through four valleys. Stay in Selva, Corvara, Canazei/Campitello or Arabba for access.

Does Dolomiti Superski connect all its areas by ski?

No. It unites 12 areas under one pass, but not all are linked by lifts.

Is Kronplatz a town?

No — it is a ski system and tourist area. Brunico, Riscone, San Vigilio, Valdaora and Perca are the bases.

Can I do the mountains without a car?

Often yes: Perca, Daolasa, Merano and Bolzano are rated excellent without a car; central Ortisei, Selva, Cortina and Courmayeur work after a transfer. No rating promises a late bus or room for skis.

Is Cortina a day trip from Venice?

Don't plan it that way: the road to Cortina is not the road to the trail or lift. For a real mountain programme, stay overnight.

Can I drive up to Alpe di Siusi?

Road access is restricted, with exceptions for accommodation guests, parking reservations and permit checks. Agree it with your hotel.

Is Treviso SOUTH the airport stop?

No. The ATVO stop called Treviso SOUTH is not Treviso airport.

Is a hotel spa the same as thermal water?

No. Spa, pool, heated outdoor pool and thermal water are different; thermal venues like Bormio have their own rules and age limits.

Where should a family with young children look?

Compare Ortisei, San Vigilio, Andalo, Daolasa and Pinzolo by the children's ages: a short way to school, a pool with the right age limit and early meals matter more than kilometres of runs.
